About National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)

⁤NIOS operates as an “Open School” serving a diverse group of learners up to the pre-degree level. ⁤⁤Started as a flexible project by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 1979, it evolved following the 1986 National Policy on Education proposal. ⁤⁤This initiative aimed to expand open learning nationwide, independently managing a customized curriculum and exams leading to certification. ⁤

⁤Consequently, the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the Government of India established the National Open School (NOS) in November 1989, merging CBSE’s pilot project with NOS. ⁤⁤With the authority to enroll, examine, and certify students in pre-degree courses, NOS saw an important transition. ⁤

⁤In July 2002, the Ministry of Education (MOE) renamed the organization from the National Open School (NOS) to the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). ⁤⁤NIOS was created to provide relevant continuing education up to the pre-degree level through an Open Learning system, focusing on specific client groups as an informal educational choice in line with national policies. ⁤⁤NIOS aimed to contribute to: ⁤

  • ⁤Expanding education for all, ⁤
  • Promoting fairness and justice in society, and ⁤
  • Fostering a culture of lifelong learning. ⁤
